Judy became the very public face of A Course in Miracles in the late ‘70s. She personally introduced it to thousands of people in events around the country. She told a compelling story of how ACIM had been scribed by Helen with connection and support from Bill, how miraculously it came to Helen word for word just as it was printed, and how the whole copying, distributing, and then publishing of it was one miracle after another. She told how she at first had to “xerox” copy after copy to give to people who were interested and how there was no way she could keep up with the demand for early copies. She talked about how the money to professionally publish was miraculously received. The story seemed almost too good to be true.
Regardless of the fact that it still seemed very polarized, I did feel that people were looking at this a little differently. There was more openness to the other point of view than I have seen before. Maybe two plus years of the pandemic has changed people a bit. Perhaps we realize a little more that we don't know everything. A Course in Miracles says, "Whenever anyone can listen fairly to both sides of any issue, he will make the right decision. This is because he has the answer. Conflict can seem to be interpersonal, but it must be intrapersonal first." (OrEd.Tx.7.12) That was in the reading read earlier.
People forget this statement from A Course in Miracles. It's a real call to listen fairly. That's an important adverb there, "fairly." Listen fairly to both sides of big issues like this. "Yes," this applies to us A Course in Miracles students too. We need to be able to listen fairly to both sides of the question. This means the abortion question, or the Covid question, or the vaccination question, or the free speech question, ... or any of those big societal questions. We need to be able to listen fairly. What do we mean by "fairly?" Well, at the least that means we need to be able to listen and not react with anger, and fear, and attack.

"There is no choice in this because only you can be the foundation of God's church. A church is where an altar is, and the presence of the altar is what makes it a church. Any church which does not inspire love has a hidden altar which is not serving the purpose for which God intended it. I must found His church on you because you who accept me as a model are literally my disciples." (OrEd.Tx.6.12)

What has been the revealed lesson for me is that I’m still on this trust journey, and trust is really important for human relations, and also for our relationship with God. A Course in Miracles talks about the six stages in the development of trust. I think the first one is undoing, then sorting out. The third one is relinquishment, and then there’s a period of settling down. This is followed by unsettling and finally by the stage of achievement. I don’t know exactly where I am in that process. I actually feel like sometimes with just the Holy Spirit, I’m in a much better stage, or much further along, than I am with some people. What I will say is that I feel like we sometimes go back and forth into different levels and stages of that trust. We’re at several different places in that trust continuum at once, if you will.
When I told my friend about this – I didn’t tell him about my experience with my parents – but when I talked to him about this I did come back to peace. I did come back to my center, because I knew not getting married was the right thing. I don’t know how it’s all going to work out. Further down in this teaching, if you look at this deeper, if you go back and do the reading on the Rules of Decision, what A Course in Miracle says is that even if we make a mistake just turn it over the Holy Spirit. I guess people who have great authority can make great mistakes, right? Even if it’s a mistake in the world, or if it’s in our personal lives, even if we make a huge mistake and hurt people – not necessarily intentionally – but hurt them, just turn it over to the Holy Spirit and the miracle happens.
Yesterday in Dolores Park, the city was celebrating Gay Pride weekend. San Francisco is having its first, really big, social, lots of people, Gay Pride celebration in three years. I live right next to this park where a lot of community things happen, and local people gather. I'm right next to the Castro neighborhood, so a lot of gay activities happen around there. There's a lot of events that happen in Dolores Park on Gay Pride weekend, but they haven't been happening for two plus years. They didn't happen at all in 2020. They happened in a very limited way in 2021. But they are happening this year. The park was packed with people yesterday. I thought that was a great thing. That's something to witness and to acknowledge. Something has healed. The fear is healing; Covid is healing. However you want to look at it, I think it's worth celebrating.
Something that maybe people might not know that shifted tremendously just this week is that the W.H.O. (the World Health Organization) and the prominent medical research journal The Lancet, (or a commission from *The Lancet*) now after two plus years, these very prominent voices for the entire Covid19 pandemic have changed their beliefs. They have now embraced the idea that the SARS-CoV-2 virus most likely escaped from the Wuhan, China lab. Understand, that was considered a crack pot, conspiracy theory not that long ago. If you said anything like that on a YouTube video, that video was censored a year or two ago. But now the lab leak theory has been embraced by these two Covid institutions. The W.H.O. and The Lancet declaring that most likely the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid19 was something that escaped from the Wuhan laboratory means the lab was working on bio-weapons. Why were they working on bio-weapons? Well, they were. What government really wants to create a bio-weapon? Well, apparently a lot of governments do, and apparently our own government does, because the U.S. government partly funded this research and that's come out too. So I thought about that, and I thought about the Covid epidemic. And then I thought about what Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and he is us."
A Course in Miracles says, "Your brothers are everywhere. You do not have to seek far for salvation." (OrEd.Tx.9.38) I think simply intermingling with our brothers, sisters, and others is very healing. It's actually salvation. A Course in Miracles is sometimes described as salvation through relationships, and I think that's an accurate description of the A Course in Miracles process. A Course in Miracles is telling us to connect, to join, and to not isolate. Rejoice with our sisters, brothers, and others. That's what I see happening. I think it's great because as I said, I love people. Don't we all love people?
People, don't you love 'em? I love 'em. I noticed that as I continue on with my practice of A Course in Miracles, that I see everybody as a very, very, dear friend. I feel love for the people that I meet and for the people that I see. That resonates in an A Course in Miracles teaching, that says, "I will recognize in everyone my dearest Friend." (OrEd.WkBk.60.4) I feel that. I've moved tremendously in that direction over the many years of my study and practice of A Course in Miracles.
